2. The rule we follow

Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, a cookie that is not strictly necessary may only be set with your consent, and that consent has to be freely given. So no analytics cookie is set before you press accept, and no design trick is used to make accepting the easier option.

The two buttons are identical in size, in weight, in colour and in position — deliberately, because a reject button that is harder to find is not a choice.

3. Strictly necessary cookies

These are set without consent, because the service cannot work without them.

  • Session cookie — keeps you signed in as you move between pages. Expires when you sign out, or after 30 days. First party.
  • Cookie choice — remembers what you chose here, so you are not asked again on every page. Stored for 12 months. First party.
  • Security token — protects forms against cross-site request forgery. Expires with the session. First party.

4. Analytics cookies

Set only if you accept, and removed if you later reject.

  • Page view counter — counts how many people read a page, so we can tell which explanations are working. Aggregated, not tied to your account. Stored for 14 months. First party.

We do not use analytics to build a profile of you, and the data is not shared with anyone for advertising.

5. What we do not set

  • No advertising or retargeting cookies.
  • No social media tracking pixels.
  • No cross-site tracking of any kind.
  • No third-party cookies from any advertising network.

We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. The privacy notice sets out the rest.

6. Controlling cookies in your browser

Every current browser lets you block or delete cookies from its settings. Blocking the strictly necessary ones will stop you being able to sign in, which is a browser-level consequence rather than a policy of ours.
